Birds

Birds

I want to write a poem about
how the birds returned
both winters -- once
right after she lived
and once right after
she died.
I want to say that
their coming
heralded both winters' beginning,
and that when they left
I remembered the funny way things go.
That is to say, I understood
for one spring
one of the many ways
in which we are delivered.
